Electric vehicles

Electric mobility in India is growing quickly, and e-rickshaws are already a common sight in Uttar Pradesh's towns. This page covers EV registrations from the Vahan portal and the state's EV manufacturing incentives.

Importance to the Indian economy

Registered electric vehicles in India grew from 11.83 lakh in 2022-23 to 16.81 lakh in 2023-24 and 19.68 lakh in 2024-25 (Vahan portal data, Ministry of Heavy Industries reply via PIB).

Manufacturing opportunities span vehicles, battery packs and cells, motors and controllers, and charging equipment. Central PLI schemes for auto and advanced chemistry cells sit alongside the UP policy's capital subsidy.

Lapsed parts: the vehicle purchase subsidy was available for one year from its notification and has ended. The 100% road-tax and registration fee waiver applied for the first three years (to about Oct 2025); in years four and five it applies only to EVs manufactured, bought and registered in UP.

Applicable across sectors. A manufacturing project of ₹50 crore or more can also be evaluated under the UP Industrial Investment & Employment Promotion Policy 2022 (valid to 3 Nov 2027), and an MSME unit under the UP MSME Promotion Policy 2022. As a rule only one state policy can be used for the same investment, so compare the sector policy with these general policies on your own numbers before applying. Central schemes can often be combined with state support: see subsidy stacking.
