Solar & green hydrogen

India is adding renewable capacity at record pace, led by solar. Uttar Pradesh has set a target of 22,000 MW of solar by 2026-27 and has a separate green hydrogen policy. This page covers MNRE capacity data and the state incentives.

Importance to the Indian economy

India added a record 44.61 GW of solar capacity in 2025-26, after 23.83 GW in 2024-25 and 15.03 GW in 2023-24. Cumulative solar capacity reached 150.26 GW on 31 March 2026 (MNRE, via PIB).

Total installed renewable energy capacity rose from 198.75 GW (March 2024) to 220.10 GW (March 2025) and 274.68 GW (March 2026). For industrial units in UP, rooftop and captive solar can cut power costs, and the state offers duty exemptions and storage support.

UP incentives for this sector

The Uttar Pradesh policy that applies to this sector, with the main incentives as stated in the policy or on Invest UP. Rates, caps and eligibility conditions are summarised; the policy text and its guidelines decide each case.

In force

Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy 2022

Five years from issuance; target 22,000 MW by 2026-27

IncentiveSupport (as per the policy)
Duties100% stamp duty; 100% electricity duty for 10 years
Battery storage₹2.5 crore per MW
Residential rooftop (state top-up)₹15,000 per kW, capped at ₹30,000 per consumer
In force

Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy 2024

Five years

IncentiveSupport (as per the policy)
Capital subsidyUp to 30% (up to 40% for the first five projects), maximum ₹225 crore
LandGovernment land at ₹15,000 per acre a year (private projects) / ₹1 (public)
Duties and charges100% stamp duty; 100% electricity duty and wheeling/transmission exemptions for 10 years

Applicable across sectors. A manufacturing project of ₹50 crore or more can also be evaluated under the UP Industrial Investment & Employment Promotion Policy 2022 (valid to 3 Nov 2027), and an MSME unit under the UP MSME Promotion Policy 2022. As a rule only one state policy can be used for the same investment, so compare the sector policy with these general policies on your own numbers before applying. Central schemes can often be combined with state support: see subsidy stacking.
