Importance to the Indian economy

International tourist arrivals in India (foreign tourists plus NRIs) rose from 18.89 million in 2023 to 20.57 million in 2024. Foreign tourist arrivals were 9.95 million in 2024, and foreign exchange earnings from tourism were ₹2,93,033 crore (Ministry of Tourism, via PIB).

As per the Ministry of Tourism, Uttar Pradesh was among the top five states for foreign tourist visits in 2024. Hotels, homestays, wellness and heritage units in the state can claim capital or interest subsidy under the 2022 policy.
